Ideal Weight Calculator — Find Your Healthy Weight

Calculate your ideal body weight using 4 medical formulas (Robinson, Miller, Devine, Hamwi). Get your healthy weight range by height and sex.

What is this calculator?

The Ideal Weight Calculator estimates your ideal body weight based on your height and sex using four established medical formulas: Robinson, Miller, Devine, and Hamwi. These formulas provide a weight range that is associated with lower health risks for most adults.

Formula

For men: Robinson = 52 kg + 1.9 kg per inch over 5 feet; Miller = 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg per inch over 5 feet; Devine = 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet; Hamwi = 48 kg + 2.7 kg per inch over 5 feet. For women: Robinson = 49 kg + 1.7 kg per inch over 5 feet; Miller = 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg per inch over 5 feet; Devine = 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet; Hamwi = 45.5 kg + 2.2 kg per inch over 5 feet. Height in inches is converted from centimeters.

Example

A 170 cm (66.9 inches) male: Robinson = 52 + 1.9*(66.9-60) = 65.1 kg; Miller = 56.2 + 1.41*(66.9-60) = 65.9 kg; Devine = 50 + 2.3*(66.9-60) = 65.9 kg; Hamwi = 48 + 2.7*(66.9-60) = 66.6 kg; Average = (65.1+65.9+65.9+66.6)/4 = 65.9 kg.

How to use

  1. 1Enter your height in centimeters (between 100 and 250) and select your sex (male or female) from the dropdown menu.
  2. 2Click the Calculate button. The tool applies each formula to compute your ideal weight in kilograms for Robinson, Miller, Devine, and Hamwi, then calculates the average.
  3. 3Review the results: each formula gives a slightly different value. The average provides a single estimate. Compare these numbers to your current weight to assess if you are within a healthy range.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the Robinson, Miller, Devine, and Hamwi formulas?
These formulas differ in their base weight and adjustment per inch over 5 feet. For example, for men, Robinson starts at 52 kg with 1.9 kg/inch, while Hamwi starts at 48 kg with 2.7 kg/inch. They were developed from different populations and time periods, so results vary slightly.
How should I interpret the average ideal weight?
The average is the mean of the four formula results, providing a single reference point. It is not a clinical standard but a convenient summary. Your actual healthy weight may vary based on muscle mass, bone density, and body composition.
When should I use this calculator and what are its limitations?
Use it for general health awareness or as a starting point for weight goals. Limitations: it does not account for age, body fat percentage, or muscle mass. Athletes or elderly individuals may find the estimates less accurate.
What does the Devine formula output mean?
The Devine formula was originally developed to calculate ideal body weight for drug dosing. For a 170 cm male, it gives 65.9 kg. It is widely used in clinical settings but may underestimate ideal weight for taller individuals.
Are these formulas based on WHO standards?
No, these formulas predate WHO BMI guidelines. They were developed by clinicians (Robinson, Miller, Devine, Hamwi) for estimating ideal weight. The WHO uses BMI categories (18.5-24.9) for healthy weight, which is a different approach.
